Top Three Benefits of Yoga

There are so many amazing benefits of yoga! I could probably write about the benefits for days, but that would be a very long blog post. I thought it would be helpful to share what I believe are the top three benefits of the practice in order to keep it short and sweet. These are what I believe to be the top benefits of yoga that anyone can receive from practicing it.

Top Three Benefits of Yoga

1. Yoga helps you focus on the present moment. By needing to pay attention to your breath and your movements, yoga brings you into the present moment. It’s much harder to be worrying about things or feeling anxiety if you’re focused on your movements and breath. Typically when you are practicing yoga you focus your present attention on what is happening. Yoga teaches us to be present centered, which is an excellent benefit of the practice.

2. Yoga helps you regulate your breath. When you’re practicing yoga you can influence how you are breathing. Think about when you’re feeling stressed out. What’s your breathing like? Typically when you’re stressed you are breathing very short breaths and that creates more tension. When you’re practicing yoga, on the other hand, you’re able to take in deeper breaths and influence the type of breathing that you’re doing. In other words, yoga can lead to calming breathing patterns. Yoga can lead to breathing in a way that will help you to relax. Being able to calm your breathing is an incredible benefit of yoga, especially when you’re feeling stressed out or anxious. You can use this breathing whenever you might need it.

3. Yoga can reduce physical tension. Often times when you’re feeling stressed your body tenses up. Our muscles become tense when we are stressed or anxious. We can become physically tense and our muscles tighten. During yoga classes we have the ability to stretch. We can stretch different parts of the body. Often times certain types of yoga can include poses that stretch the entire body. This allows your muscles to ultimately release that tension that you might have been feeling before the class. Relieving physical tension is another great benefit of yoga.
