Using Breath during Difficult Times

Life can sometimes feel hectic. Around this time of year, when the holidays are upon us, we tend to get even more busy than usual. Often times we are busy coordinating gatherings, preparing meals, buying food and gifts. We are just plain busy.

If you are like me and you live with chronic health conditions, you’ve probably experienced some type of tough situation or situations related to your illnesses. You’ve probably gone through difficult doctor appointments, tests, treatments, or therapies. You’ve probably gone through some type of painful or traumatic experiences related to your illnesses or conditions. I know that I have.

When life feels hectic, that’s the time to breathe. When life feels stressful, that’s the time to use the yoga breath. When you have a difficult or painful medical experience, use yoga breathing techniques to help you. When you feel the most stressed or overwhelmed, that’s when using the yogic breathing techniques are ideal.

One of the absolute best things you can do for yourself is to use yogic breathing like belly breathing when you are going through a difficult time. To do belly breathing, you gently inhale and exhale through your nose. Let your belly expand as you inhale. Allow your belly to contract as you exhale. Allow yourself a chance to breathe in this way, even if it’s just a few breaths when you feel like life is tough.

Use your yoga breathing during stressful times with your families and friends during Thanksgiving. You can do belly breathing during all the holidays. Do your yoga breathing during painful treatments. Use your yoga breathing during stressful or anxiety provoking doctor’s appointments. Remember that any point in time you can rely on your yoga breathing in an instant. No matter where you are, no matter what you’re doing, you can breathe in a way that will be helpful. You can breathe in a way that will bring calmness if you let it.
